my lines

  • The reason you get trapped in a language game is that a word’s definition is fixed (grounded) hard inside you — so when you use ordinary words to describe somewhere the definitions are loose, you get stuck.
  • What is “outside”, for instance? Outside of experience — outside? Buried in the word.
  • The way out: try swapping in a different word.
  • My compulsion to make everything one thing, that mood — is that also me trying to explain with grounded language?
  • Which comes first, distinction or rule — is that just wordplay? A language game? Two sides of one coin?
  • Don’t get trapped in the language game.

from the AI

[AI] The situation: reality (nature) contains no “distinctions” and no “rules”. Only phenomena, in one undivided lump.
The move: the moment a human points at that lump and says “hm, shall we sort this?”, a language game begins.
The conclusion: at that very moment the card called distinction and the card called rule appear on the board together, as a set. Neither is first. They were both rendered the instant the game switched on.

[AI] Whether materialism wins or idealism wins:
the neurosurgeon still places the electrode,
the anaesthetist still calculates the dose,
the BCI decoder still recalibrates.
Nobody changes how they work. If an opposition makes no practical difference at all, it is probably not a real opposition but a problem of language. Carnap called this a pseudo-problem.
Taken apart:
“Matter comes first” = in causal explanation, physical description is the fundamental layer → it works, it predicts
“Perception comes first” = in the order of justification, experience is the starting point → true, irrefutable
